What are the challenges for recognising the handwritten characters?

Handwritten digit recognition is a standard benchmark in Machine Learning in the form of the MNIST dataset. For example, scikit-learn, a python package for Machine Learning uses it as a tutorial ...

Can I use 4 neurons for output layer to classify hand written digit?

One problem that I see is that you can no longer use the cross-entropy loss function for training, or at least I am not sure how you could do it. This cost function has many advantages, one of them ...

Can I use 4 neurons for output layer to classify hand written digit?

I believe it is because when using the binary output, it makes the neurons dependent on each other, but technically it should not be, because it complicates two problems: The first problem is how ...

Can I use 4 neurons for output layer to classify hand written digit?

Of course you can but I'd not recommend doing this way. First - it is not part of ML because it is straight logic and should not be learned, so I don't think backpropagation or other algorithms ...

What are the disadvantages to using a distance metric in character recognition prediction

As I see it, the question boils down to the comparison between distance (function/metric) based Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and (for example) OCR done by means of Convolutional Neural Networks ...

Does this tutorial use normalization the right way?

The normalize() function used in the tutorial is the incorrect function to use for normalization in this context. This normalize function is for finding L1 and L2 norms. The correct layer/function ...

How to approach this handwritten digit recognition?

I think one approach you can try to segment the digits and Connected Components Labeling (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connected-component_labeling). With it, you'll end up with a label for each ...
